Preparing for flashing§

  1. Download and unpack the firmware archive The “Download” button is in the panel under the device name.
  2. Connect the router to the computer with a cable (Ethernet) Flashing over Wi-Fi is not possible.
  3. Install OpenWrt The instructions below assume the router already runs OpenWrt.

Installing from OpenWrt§

First install the Breed bootloader and prepare the EEPROM (steps below), then choose one of the two flashing methods — Method #1 (via KeenBOOT, recommended) or Method #2 (via Breed and Telnet).

Installing the Breed bootloader and preparing the EEPROM§

  1. Installing the package In the installed OpenWrt, connect the router to the internet and install the kmod-mtd-rw package.

  2. Saving the calibration In LuCI (the System - Backup / Flash firmware tab), save the factory partition.

  3. Preparing the EEPROM In the “Set MAC” tool, load the saved file and enter the MAC address from the sticker. Add the generated eeprom.bin to the firmware folder.

  4. Serving the bootloader Serve breed.bin from the archive with HFS.exe.

  5. Finding the partition Connect the router to the internet and run over SSH:

    shell
    cat /proc/mtd

    Sample output:

    dev: size erasesize name
    mtd0: 10000000 00020000 "Bootloader"

Note the name of the mtd0 partition — it is u-boot or Bootloader. Use it in the last command.

  6. Writing the bootloader Run over SSH:

Enter one command at a time
    1. opkg update
    2. opkg install kmod-mtd-rw
    3. cd /tmp
    4. wget http://192.168.1.2/breed.bin
    5. insmod mtd-rw i_want_a_brick=1
    6. mtd unlock /dev/mtd1
    7. mtd write /tmp/breed.bin Bootloader
    8. reboot

MethodINew, recommended§

  1. Replace the bootloader with KeenBOOT.
  2. Upload Firmware, EEPROM and U-Config from the archive one by one through the web interface, following the instructions.
  3. Reboot the device.

MethodIIOld§

  1. Serving the files Start HFS.exe and drag all .bin files from the firmware folder into its window.

    Tip

To minimize installation problems, it is recommended to set the IP address 192.168.1.2 on the network card.

Static IP on the network card

  2. Flashing over Telnet Start PuTTY, connect over Telnet to 192.168.1.1 on port 23 and paste the commands with the right mouse button, waiting for the previous one to finish.

    Warning

    • Turn off your OS firewall and antivirus beforehand.
    • The messages skipped bad blocks and Flash erasure failed with -5 after entering the commands are normal.

    Caution

    • Each line is a separate command. If it fails, run it again.
    • Compare the IP in the wget commands below with the IP shown in HFS. In the Breed bootloader it always starts with 192.168.1.xxx.
Enter one command at a time
  1. flash erase 0x80000 0x7f00000
  2. wget http://192.168.1.2/u-config.bin
  3. flash write 0x80000 0x80001000 0x80000
  4. flash write 0x4040000 0x80001000 0x80000
  5. wget http://192.168.1.2/eeprom.bin
  6. flash write 0x100000 0x80001000 0x80000
  7. flash write 0x40c0000 0x80001000 0x80000
  8. wget http://192.168.1.2/firmware.bin
  9. flash write 0x180000 0x80001000 0x1AB3F00
  10. flash write 0x4140000 0x80001000 0x1AB3F00
  11. wget http://192.168.1.2/u-state.bin
  12. flash write 0x3fc0000 0x80001000 0x80000
  13. env set autoboot.command "boot flash 0x4140000"
  14. env save
  15. reset

Updating the firmware§

To update, use any method for NAND memory.

Reverting to stock firmware§

You will need the backup saved before flashing. The steps are in the instructions for MT7621.
